Just trying to find ways to pass the time while I'm out of school and not yet hired, and this seems like something that would be a fun way to waste a morning or two. Of course, I'd need to know if it would suck as badly as the car auction I went to once. The bidding STARTED at a couple grand for every single car, and I wasn't even allowed to bid because, for some dumb reason, you needed to be 21 to do so. I'm allowed to live independently and manage my own finances, but god forbid I go out and BUY something. Whatever, though. I'm not concerned with actually getting anything, but I need to know if it will be interesting at all or if I'm going to leave immediately and regret waking up so early.

You might try going and talking to the guys running the auction. If you can make a good impression on them, convince them that you can make good on your bids and not leave them hanging, they might let you play. Show them the cash, and let them know how you plan to get the stuff out of their unit.

my mom went to a couple. The storage bins in the lower middle class areas seemed the best. Ones in the upper middle class were over priced and ones in though areas were gems or trash.

She only bought one. Went halves on one with a lady she meet. There were a bunch of books and a dining room table. Bidding started at 50. Nobody would pay. Mon wanted books and the lady wanted the table so they paid 25 each and it worked out.

The ones that aren't advertised all over are less traveled and have less competition.
